Debt Validation Rights
If you receive a communication about a debt, you may have the right to request verification before certain collection activity continues.
What is debt validation?
Debt validation means written confirmation of the debt, including information such as:
- The amount of the debt
- The name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed
- That the debt collector is authorized to collect the debt
- Other documentation required under applicable law
Timing
In many cases, you must submit a written validation request within 30 days of the initial written notice about the debt. Requests submitted after that period may still be considered, but all collection activity may not be paused.
